Worn crossbody or on the shoulder
The same adjustable strap allows two very different ways of wearing the bag, and they're worth knowing.
The crossbody carry, with a long strap across the torso, spreads the weight over the whole upper body instead of concentrating it on one shoulder. It's the most comfortable way to carry a bag on long walks, the safest on public transport (the bag stays in front of you, within sight) and the most practical on a bike.
The shoulder carry, with a shortened strap, gives a dressier look and lets you slip the bag off in one movement. It's the way to wear it for a lunch, a meeting or an evening out.
The advantage of an adjustable strap is precisely that you can switch from one to the other in seconds, depending on the time of day.
Which capacity for which use
A crossbody bag isn't meant to carry everything, and that's its strength: it forces you to edit.
A small size holds a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick. It's suited to outings, dinners and days when you're not carrying anything for work. A medium size adds a small notebook, a power bank, a pair of glasses and a pouch: it's the format that covers the widest range of situations, and the best first purchase if you're only going to own one.

What makes a good crossbody bag
Three construction details change everyday use.
A wide strap spreads the weight and doesn't dig into the shoulder, whereas a narrow strap creates a pressure point as soon as the bag is loaded. An easy-to-reach adjustment system, with a buckle or a slider, lets you adjust the length without having to detach the strap. A zip or secure flap closure genuinely protects the contents in a crowd, unlike a simple magnetic opening.
A removable strap offers an extra advantage: take it off and the bag becomes an evening clutch.
Care
On a crossbody bag, the area that wears fastest isn't the body of the bag but the strap's attachment points and snap hooks. Check them from time to time and avoid overloading the bag, which speeds up their wear.
Nourish the leather two to three times a year with a suitable cream. On light leathers, beware of repeated rubbing against raw denim when worn crossbody: it's the most common cause of colour transfer. Find our care products.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a crossbody bag and a shoulder bag?
It's often the same bag, worn differently. Worn crossbody, with a long strap across the torso, it spreads the weight and keeps the contents secure on public transport. Worn on the shoulder, with a shortened strap, it looks dressier. An adjustable strap lets you switch from one to the other.
What can you fit in a small crossbody bag?
A small size holds a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick. A medium size adds a notebook, a power bank, glasses and a pouch. For a laptop or files, you'll need a larger handbag.
Is the strap adjustable on Cosmoparis bags?
Our crossbody bags come with an adjustable strap, often removable, so you can alternate between crossbody and shoulder carry and turn the bag into a clutch. Details are given on each product page.
