Heeled ankle boots

Block heel, wide heel or slim heel

The shape of the heel determines comfort more than its height, and the three families aren't worn in the same way.

The block heel is the most stable and the most comfortable for everyday wear. Its broad base secures every step, including on cobblestones or wet pavements, and lets you walk for a long time. It's the obvious choice for an ankle boot worn every day in winter.

The wide, slightly flared heel offers the same comfort with a softer line. It works particularly well with skirts and dresses, where the heel remains visible.

The slim heel refines the ankle and gives an instantly dressier look. It does, however, call for even ground and is better suited to evenings and occasions where you won't be walking much.

Why a heeled ankle boot is more comfortable than a pump

At the same heel height, an ankle boot can almost always be worn for longer than a pump, and the reason is simple: the shaft supports the ankle.

In a pump, stability relies solely on the balance of the foot, and the ankle works constantly to compensate. In an ankle boot, the shaft wraps around the joint and absorbs part of that work. The foot also slides forward less, which reduces pressure on the toes, the main cause of discomfort in a pump.

Added to this are our two construction hallmarks: comfort padding placed between the insole board and the sock lining, and a breathable leather lining, which matters all the more in a closed shoe worn all day.

One thing to note before ordering: heel height is measured on the outside of the shoe on a size 37 prototype, with a difference of up to 2.5 centimetres by size 41.

How to wear them

With straight or skinny jeans, tuck the hem into the shaft or roll it up above: the ankle stays exposed and the heel fully visible, which lengthens the leg. With wide-leg trousers, the heeled ankle boot works as long as the hem falls low enough to hide the shaft: only the heel shows, and the effect is very sharp.

With a midi skirt or a flowing dress, leave a gap of bare skin between the hem and the shaft. It's this break that lightens the silhouette. See our socks to style that gap with a fine knit.

For an even dressier option, discover our pumps.

Frequently asked questions

What heel height should I choose for comfortable ankle boots?

The shape of the heel matters more than its height. A block or wide heel spreads the weight over a broad base and lets you walk for a long time, even at a significant height. A low slim heel can be less comfortable than a higher block heel.

Block heel or slim heel: which should I choose?

The block heel for everyday wear and walking on all kinds of surfaces. The slim heel for evenings and dressy occasions where you'll mostly be seated.

Is a heeled ankle boot more comfortable than a pump?

Generally yes, at the same height. The shaft supports the ankle and absorbs part of the stabilising work, and the foot slides forward less, which reduces pressure on the toes.
