Calf width, the real deciding factor
With a boot, size alone isn't enough: it is the calf width that determines whether the pair will be wearable or not. A shaft that is too narrow compresses and becomes uncomfortable after an hour; a shaft that is too wide gapes at the back and breaks the vertical line.
To measure yours, wrap a tape measure around your calf at its widest point, standing up with your leg relaxed. Then compare this measurement with the shaft circumference given on the product page.
There are three solutions depending on your shape. A zipped shaft offers a precise fit and makes the boot easier to put on. An elastic panel at the back of the shaft adapts to a wider range of calves: it is the most forgiving option. A soft shaft in fine leather relaxes slightly with wear and ends up hugging the leg.
Shaft height and proportions
The knee-high boot is the most flattering height: the shaft stops just below the joint, without covering it, which lengthens the leg without restricting movement. It is also the most versatile, worn with a skirt as well as with tucked-in trousers.
A shaft that stops at mid-calf cuts the leg at its widest point: keep this height for wearing under trousers or a long skirt. To go above the knee, see our over-the-knee boots.
Facing winter
This is the most exposed shoe in the wardrobe: rain, snow, road salt, and sudden temperature changes between the outdoors and a heated interior.
Three habits genuinely protect a pair. Waterproof before the first wear, then every three to four weeks. This is essential on nubuck or suede, where a single rainy day can leave permanent water marks. Never dry them near a radiator: direct heat cracks and shrinks leather, and the damage is irreversible. Deal with salt immediately: white marks should be dabbed with a damp cloth before the salt penetrates the fibres.
Add a boot shaper or simply a roll of newspaper inside to stop the shaft from folding and leaving a permanent crease at the ankle. Find our shoe care products.
How to wear them
With skinny jeans or leggings, tuck the hem into the shaft: it is the simplest and most effective combination. With a midi skirt, make sure the hem falls above the top of the shaft, leaving a few centimetres of leg or tights showing: direct contact between hem and shaft weighs down the silhouette. With a short dress, the knee-high boot balances the proportions and becomes the statement piece of the outfit.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose boots according to my calf width?
Measure your calf at its widest point, standing with your leg relaxed, then compare with the shaft circumference on the product page. If you have fuller calves, choose a zipped shaft or one with an elastic panel, which is more forgiving than a fixed shaft.
Which boot height should I choose?
Knee height is the most flattering and the most versatile: it lengthens the leg without restricting movement. Avoid shafts that stop at mid-calf, which cut the leg at its widest point, unless they are covered by trousers or a long skirt.
How do I care for leather boots in winter?
Waterproof before the first wear, then every three to four weeks. Never dry them near a heat source, which cracks the leather. Dab salt marks immediately with a damp cloth. Store boots upright, with a boot shaper or newspaper in the shaft.
Are Cosmoparis boots lined?
All our linings are made of leather. Leather breathes, absorbs moisture and doesn't irritate the skin, which matters especially in a closed, high-rising shoe worn all day.
