The shoe for everyday walking
The flat ankle boot is the pair that clocks up the most miles in a wardrobe, and that is where build quality shows.
Three things matter. First, the sole: a thick sole insulates from the cold and cushions hard surfaces, a decisive point when you walk on concrete all day. Next, the comfort padding, which we build in between the insole board and the sock lining: it absorbs the impact of every step. Finally, the leather lining, standard on all our styles: it breathes and absorbs moisture, whereas a synthetic lining makes the foot sweat and overheat in a closed shoe.
A tip that significantly extends the life of the pair: have a protective sole fitted by a cobbler as soon as you buy them. On a flat shoe worn intensively, the sole wears faster than on a heeled style.
Chelsea, lace-up or zip
The Chelsea boot with elasticated side panels slips on in one movement, with no fiddling. It is the most practical for everyday wear, and its clean shaft lengthens the silhouette. One thing to know: on a slim ankle, it may sit slightly loose.
The lace-up ankle boot offers the best fit. Lacing lets you adjust the tightness precisely, making it ideal for slim ankles as well as high insteps. It is also the most structured shape, the one with the most character.
The zipped ankle boot combines both advantages: a fitted shaft and quick slipping on. Find these definitions in our shape guide.
How to wear them without shortening your silhouette
This is the only point to watch with a flat ankle boot: without a heel, the leg line is not extended, so you need to avoid anything that cuts it.
With straight-leg jeans, turn up the hem just above the shaft to reveal the ankle: a few centimetres of visible skin is enough to lengthen the leg. With wide-leg or fluid trousers, let the hem cover the shaft entirely, so that only the toe of the shoe shows: the line stays continuous from top to floor. With a midi skirt, choose a style with a short, fitted shaft rather than a wide shaft that would create volume at the ankle.
