Walking comfortably in heeled boots
It is easier than in a pump of the same height, for a mechanical reason: the shaft supports the ankle and takes on part of the work of stabilising you. The foot also slides forward less, which reduces pressure on the toes.
Then it's a matter of choosing the right heel. A block or wide heel offers a broad base of support: it is the only sensible choice for a boot worn in winter, on wet or uneven pavements. A slim heel refines the line but needs even ground; keep it for evenings and short journeys.
On top of this come our two construction hallmarks: comfort padding built in between the insole board and the sock lining, and a breathable leather lining, essential in a high-cut shoe worn all day.
A useful reminder: heel height is measured on the outside of the shoe on a size 37 prototype, with a difference of up to 2.5 centimetres by size 41.
The silhouette effect
No other shoe plays so much on proportions. The shaft creates a continuous vertical line from knee to floor, and the heel adds height: the lengthening effect is cumulative.
To make the most of it, go for tonal continuity between the lower half of your outfit and the boot. Black opaque tights with a black boot, or raw denim jeans with a dark brown boot, extend the line without a break. Conversely, a dark boot under a light skirt creates a sharp contrast that visually shortens the leg.
How to wear them
With skinny jeans or leggings tucked into the shaft, the silhouette is clean and the heel fully on show. With a midi skirt, leave a few centimetres between the hem and the top of the shaft. With a short dress or winter shorts worn with thick tights, the heeled boot becomes the statement piece of the outfit.
A practical point: over a day alternating between heated interiors and the cold outdoors, a leather lining handles the changes far better than a synthetic one. See also our over-the-knee boots and our heeled ankle boots.
Frequently asked questions
How do I walk comfortably in heeled boots?
Choose a block or wide heel, whose broad base of support makes walking secure on wet or uneven ground. The shaft of the boot supports the ankle and takes on part of the work of stabilising you, making them more comfortable to wear than a pump of the same height.
What should I wear with heeled boots?
Skinny jeans or leggings tucked into the shaft for a clean silhouette. A midi skirt, leaving a few centimetres between the hem and the shaft. A short dress with thick tights for maximum leg-lengthening effect.
How can I maximise the leg-lengthening effect?
Go for tonal continuity between the lower half of your outfit and the boot: black opaque tights with a black boot, raw denim jeans with a dark brown boot. A strong contrast between a light skirt and a dark boot, on the other hand, shortens the leg.
