What makes a good espadrille
An espadrille is recognisable by its braided jute rope sole, a traditional Mediterranean construction that offers two qualities that are hard to achieve any other way: remarkable lightness and instant suppleness, with no breaking in.
Quality is judged in two places. First, the tightness of the braid: densely braided rope compresses less and keeps its shape for longer. Second, the join between the rope and the outsole: this is the point that gives way first on a cheap espadrille.
On our styles, the leather or natural raffia upper and the leather lining provide better hold and comfort than an all-canvas espadrille.
Flat or wedge espadrilles
The flat espadrille is the lightest and most versatile: it replaces sandals in the city, slips into a beach bag and suits days of moderate walking.
The wedge espadrille adds height with a broad contact surface, and therefore good stability. It is the dressiest version, the one that works with a maxi dress or wide-leg trousers for a lunch or an outdoor reception. See also our wedges.
Caring for a rope sole
This is the most important point, and the rule is simple: rope cannot tolerate water. When wet, it loosens, compresses and can go mouldy as it dries. So an espadrille is not strictly speaking a beach shoe: it will take you there, but it is not meant to be worn in the water or on wet sand.
For routine care, brush dry with a soft brush to remove sand and dust. If there is a stain, dab only the affected area with a very slightly damp cloth, without ever soaking the rope. Always dry in the open air, in the shade: direct sunlight fades jute.
